John
M. Cooney
Partner
Mr. Cooney is a partner in the Firm's Fort Lauderdale
office. Mr. Cooney's practice involves both complex
commercial and tort litigation in both state and federal
court. He places special emphasis on civil fraud, commercial
law, employment law, products liability and toxic tort. Mr.
Cooney has represented several large businesses dealing with
civil fraud and non-compete clauses.
Mr. Cooney served as counsel in the multi-district
litigation of over 6,000 hemophiliacs infected with Acquired
Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) from a blood product. He
successfully authored appellate briefs on several issues
that went before the Florida Supreme Court, including the
application of market share theory of liability in blood
product cases. Mr. Cooney has further helped established new
laws in Florida by presenting various cases before the
Florida Supreme Court and winning his arguments on behalf of
his clients.
Professional Activities and Achievements
Prior to Mr. Cooney’s legal career he was a technical
specialist in the research and development of cardiac
drugs/medicines for use in humans. Some of these drugs are
now being widely used for heart patients.
Mr. Cooney is involved in various community and professional
organizations. He is a member of the Florida and North
Carolina Bar Associations. He is also a member of The
Association of Trial Lawyers of America and The Academy of
Florida Trial Lawyers.
