Robert I. Ury
Partner

Mr. Ury is a partner and chair of the Tax group at Arnstein & Lehr, where he has practiced since 1964. He is actively involved in such areas as estate planning, trust and estate administration, charitable giving, family business succession matters, employee benefits, nonqualified deferred compensation, structuring joint ventures, limited liability companies, partnerships, tax-exempt organizations and corporate and personal tax planning. Mr. Ury also has a broad tax and business practice which includes counseling corporations, tax-exempt organizations and individuals on their business and personal transactions. He has substantial expertise in counseling closely held businesses, for which he structures and negotiates shareholder buy-sell agreements, acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, and other business transactions. Mr. Ury regularly represents clients in matters before the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Tax Court and U.S. District Court.

Professional Activities and Achievements

Mr. Ury is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association; Chicago Bar Association (Member of its Employee Benefits and Trust Law Committees and former Chair of the Committees on State and Municipal Taxation and Employee Benefits); American Bar Association (Member of its Section of Taxation Committees on Closely-Held Business and Employee Benefits and Section of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Committee; Chicago Estate Planning Council; Profit Sharing 401(k) Council of America; Business Valuation Association; and Chicago Council on Planned Giving. Mr. Ury was named a Leading Lawyer in Tax Law and Business. He was also named an Illinois Super Lawyer in Estate Planning and Trusts.

 

In 2007, the Chicago Estate Planning Counsel awarded Mr. Ury the Austin Fleming Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of professional estate planning.

He is the author of numerous tax-related articles published by Taxes, The Journal of Taxation, The CLU Journal, The Chicago Law Bulletin, Profit Sharing In Action, Profit Sharing, Pension Management, Lorman Education Services, Bank Administration Institute Handbooks, Tax Management, Estates, Gifts and Trusts Journal, and Journal of Tax Practice & Procedure. He also speaks regularly at seminars sponsored by various financial institutions, the Bank Administration Institute, the American Management Association, the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the Chicago Bar Association, the Chicago Estate Planning Council, the Profit Sharing Council of America and Lorman Education Services.
